Curriculum vitae

Employment History

I completed my medical degree in New Zealand and began my ophthalmology training in the UK as a Senior House Officer at the Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton. I then took a Senior House Officer job at St Thomas' Hospital in London and went on to complete a retinal PhD at The Rayne Institute, St Thomas' Hospital. Following that I undertook a further four years of Registrar training based at Moorfields Eye Hospital, where I stayed on as a Vitreoretinal Fellow.  I now work as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at King's College Hospital, a large teaching hospital in South London.  I undertake cataract surgery and have a sub-specialty interest in macular and retinal surgery. I am an Honorary Senior Lecturer and continue my research at The Rayne Institute, now part of King's College London (University of London). My research interests and peer reviewed publications are given below.  Current interests include studies of ocular macromolecular diffusion and drug modification in relation to the pharmacotherapy of age-related macular degeneration, and ocular safety testing using cell culture techniques. In addition, I am Editor of the Moorfields Manual of Ophthalmology. I am currently UK Chief Investigator for the CABERNET study of epimacular brachytherapy, a new surgical treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration developed by NeoVista, and the MERITAGE study investigating the use of this device in patients who require frequent anti-VEGF (Lucentis/Avastin) therapy.  I am Chief Investigator of a large (n 363) UK randomised controlled trial of epimacular brachytherapy called MERLOT, which is supported via the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Comprehensive Clinical Research Network (CCRN). The CABERNET and MERITAGE studies are now closed to recruitment.  Further information for patients interested in joining the MERLOT study is available by visiting the MERLOT website (www.merlotstudy.com). Collaborative links include The School of Pharmacy (London), King's College London Physics Department, King's College London Neurosciences Division (IoP), Southampton Health Technology Assessments Centre, Queens University Belfast (Central Angiographic Reading Centre), University Eye Hospital Tubingen (Retinal Implant), and others. Active research grants are in excess of £1.3M, from national charitable research institutions and industry.
