Curriculum vitae

I completed my medical degree in New Zealand and began my ophthalmology training in the UK as a Senior House Officer at the Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton. I then took a Senior House Officer job at St Thomas' Hospital in London and went on to complete a retinal PhD at The Rayne Institute, St Thomas' Hospital. Following that I undertook a further four years of Registrar training based at Moorfields Eye Hospital, where I stayed on as a Vitreoretinal Fellow. I now work as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at King's College Hospital, a large teaching hospital in South London. I undertake cataract surgery and have a sub-specialty interest in macular and retinal surgery. I am a HEFCE Senior Lecturer at King's College London, part of the King's Health Partners, the UK's largest Academic Health Science Centre. My research interests and peer reviewed publications are given below. Current interests include studies of ocular macromolecular diffusion and drug modification in relation to the pharmacotherapy of age-related macular degeneration, and ocular safety testing using cell culture techniques. In addition, I am Editor of the Moorfields Manual of Ophthalmology. I am currently UK Chief Investigator for the CABERNET study of epimacular brachytherapy, a new surgical treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration developed by NeoVista, and the MERITAGE study investigating the use of this device in patients who require frequent anti-VEGF (Lucentis/Avastin) therapy. I also lead the MERLOT study of epimacular brachytherapy, one of the country's largest randomised controlled trials in ophthalmology (see www.merlotstudy.com). I supervise clinicians undertaking MDs and PhDs, serve as a specialist advisor to NICE, and am engaged as a Key Opinion Leader by Industry. Research income is approximately £3.2M since 2007.
